Tata Steel wants to make steel responsibly, but this is only possible when there is a healthy balance between the interests of mankind, environment, surroundings, and Tata Steel.
Tata Steel used to work with Excel sheets to plan any needed maintenance within certain departments. The department HTD was the first to feel a need to optimise the planning. Internally different planning tools were analysed. SAP’s planning tools offer a variety of possibilities, but ultimately SAP Multi Resource Scheduling, MRS in short, was chosen. The goal of the project is to replace the current Excel planning of maintenance orders with the graphic planboard SAP MRS. The project was initiated to ensure work was carried out more efficiently within the department HTD.
SAP MRS makes it possible to manage and realise a long term planning. A number of SAP products were utilised to realise the desired functionality of the deployment planning.
Tata Steel’s HTD department is situated in IJmuiden and is responsible for all internal maintenance services. A branch of HTD is GMD which is responsible for carrying out maintenance to tools and machines. HTD is internally responsible for high quality industrial service. The internal service of HTD consists of:
- Performing inspections, maintenance, and making modifications to complex installations as well as equipment.
- Developing, producing, and maintaining complex installations.
- Maintenance optimisation
SAP Multi Resource Scheduling was the ideal solution for Tata Steel to provide the planning department with the correct resources and planning information. There is a planning profile per discipline which provides a planner with relevant information and an automatic warning when planning rules are being violated. It is of great importance to Tata Steel that a long term planning can be made, during which it is checked if desired personnel and materials are available. SAP MRS makes it possible to manage and realise a long term planning. A number of SAP products were utilised to realise the desired functionality of the deployment planning. These products provide a seamless integration of the maintenance tasks to MRS, extra order data is passed on to MRS, and status integration is assigned between orders and MRS. MRS qualifications are utilised to plan the correctly certified and qualified people on the right job and planning the required specialised tools also becomes an easy task.
A number of report options were created to further optimise the planning process. Within the department there is a clear overview and it is simple to manage outstanding activities. The reports allow a comparison between planned hours and worked hours so in case it is needed the process can be directly adjusted.
Ideo realised the implementation in collaboration with Tata Steel’s project team. Subsequently, the implementation was carried out in succession in the development, test, and production environment. Following this method ensures the operation of business processes whereby the test activities, such as unit tests, user acceptance tests, and integration tests, provide the security of a smooth go-live. Project management was carried out according to the Prince2 method.
